About Mjölk

Located in the Junction, where a perfect balance between small town, old timeyness, and modern city collide. We have to admit that our shop makes its home in one of the most unique old buildings in Toronto – Victorian charm mixed with black and white Scandinavian contrast. We are in love.

We specialize in Scandinavia because the north enthralls us. Soft, quiet snowy forests and streets in the winter. Glittery, blinding sunlight on colourful buildings during the summer. Fika (coffee break) at the Konditori, with a kaffe and Napoleon pastry in hand. Trolling the Helsinki open-air markets for treasures. Stalking Arne Jacobsen at the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel. Shopping at Illums Bolighus. S.O.S. (Smör Ost och Sill = butter, cheese and herring). Swedish style. Grass roofs. Hot dog streetside snacks. And of course, the Arctic. These are a few of our favourite things.

Mjolk started via a love for mid-century modern vintage shopping but on our travels through Scandinavia, we quickly discovered that their flair for design didn’t simply cease, the craftsmanship being as strong as ever and the style innovative and dare we say, fun. Our shop still has the classics – Børge Mogensen, Hans Wegner & Alvar Aalto – but they perfectly compliment the new classics from Norway Says, Harri Koskinen & Naoto Fukasawa. And if you aren’t looking for furniture, we’ve filled the store with beautiful items for the home.

About John & Juli

One day a small town boy met a big city girl at the Cloak and Dagger. And although it took 6 months, Iceland, and a cancelled concert to reunite, our future was cemented early on, when we would spend our nights watching HGTV long distance over the phone. John spent his days and nights dreaming of a furniture store of his own, one that represented what he himself wanted to experience. Juli, in the meantime, spent her days at art school, pursuing photography and art curation and whatever else crossed her path.

A few years ago on John’s birthday, sipping Bellinis while a snowstorm raged outside, we decided then and there to pool our mutual interest in Scandinavian design into a design blog, Kitka Design Toronto. The site gave us the opportunity to explore design in Toronto, to share our thrifting adventures and ultimately to serve as a venue to share our process of renovating on a budget using our inherited cottage as the guinea pig extraordinaire.

But we couldn’t just stop there. While eating and touring our way through Scandinavia, we took some time out to find some of the best new design (and grabbed some old classics while we were at it) to offer in our well-curated lifestyle design shop, mjolk.

And so here we are. The new kid on the block, in an amazing, dynamic and creative neighborhood. We can’t wait for what the future holds…
